Habilis is an upcoming horror title set to launch on Steam next year. Developer ODale Studios, also behind Mother Hub, has provided us with a preview build for us to explore. Keep in mind that this is a work in progress and may not reflect the final game. You can currently add Habilis to your wishlist on the game’s Steam page.
The story of the game follows Nathan Walters, an aspiring content creator willing to do anything to achieve fame. As he ventures into an abandoned facility, he encounters terrors and horrors that begin to consume his mind. Nathan grapples with the disturbing sights as he delves deeper into the madness.
The game begins with Nathan arriving at the abandoned facility, and the player’s perspective is through a body-worn camera similar to what a content creator would use. This approach creates a first-person experience and allows for zooming in on objects for examination. The controls are intuitive, with clear prompts provided as you progress.
Without giving away too much, Habilis follows familiar gameplay elements of the horror genre. Players must solve puzzles, locate codes for computers, and evade the monstrous creatures that inhabit the facility. The game features dark tunnels and rooms that enhance the eerie atmosphere for exploration.
Aside from puzzles and exploration, players must manage a flashlight with a depleting battery that requires replacement. The flashlight can only be reactivated by swapping in a new battery, adding tension to the gameplay. Reloading the flashlight by holding a button can be intense, especially during monster encounters. There is no combat against the monsters, forcing players to rely on running for survival.
Sustaining too much damage from a monster leads to death, with the game autosaving periodically to track progress. While there were instances of death during gameplay, most monsters proved manageable once strategies were implemented. Sound positional issues on surround sound systems were noted, likely to be resolved before the game’s release.
Habilis promises to satisfy horror enthusiasts with its immersive atmosphere, chilling screams, expected gameplay mechanics, and relatable protagonist in Nathan. While the game’s launch is still distant, consider adding it to your Steam wishlist if you’re drawn to this genre.
